Winter blues ...

Hello my lovely friends and visitors, I hope your weekend was a really good one and your week has started well. AquaTints, stamps and embossing powder means that now there are three 2017 Christmas cards created, yipee, just need to get back into the groove of making a couple a month and we’ll be a bit better prepared and here is today’s card …

A 148mm square card
Not too deep so it will go through the post
Lots of yummy inkiness
This die is lovely
A final look

Created for me and especially for these Challenges

I am attempting to be organised for Christmas 2017 this year, lol, so I’m hoping to be well enough to play along every month with Scrappy Mo’s Rudolph Day challenge.   I love blue and Kraft and if you throw in white embossing then I am more than happy lol! I stamped the Sheena Douglass snowflake stamps with clear embossing powder and once cool I added a layer of clean water to the card before applying a layer of Spectrum Noir AquaTints, I was because I finished the background late of a night so I left it to dry overnight. The next day I added splashes of water to the background and mopped up the ink with a piece of kitchen towel which is why it looks like it’s blooming (love that look). Whilst that was drying I die cut the sentiment from a piece dark blue card and the branches from a dark piece of card which I had used to play and experiment with my lovely Pebeo Dyna iridescent paints – they have such a lovely lush look to them!

I added ribbon, twine, a charm and three sequins and I was happy. I kept it reasonably fuss free as this one will be posted. Thank you so much for taking the time to visit and comment. I really do appreciate it and I hope you get some time to do what you love to do soon ttfn Karen x

Springtime Tulips ...

Hello my lovely friends and visitors, I hope your week is going well. I’ve been experimenting with gesso and watercolours with new stencils and dies and here is the first card I have created with one of my experiments ...

A 148mm square card
Not too deep for posting
All the yummy details
I love this effect, the colour seems to go under the gesso!

Simon Says Stamps Wednesday Challenge Anything Goes:
there's no stamping on my card but I followed the theme
UnstampaBelles Challenge #65 Anything Goes optional twist use something new:
the banner and large butterfly dies are new

I wanted to see the end result if I added a light layer of gesso to some card and then applied watercolours over the top. I have to say it’s been so much fun playing with supplies like this especially as it’s just for me learning new techniques and trying them out. I wasn’t sure if I would want to use it on a card or if it would be something for my journal or mixed media tag so being able to use it on a card is a complete bonus.

My lovely husband has been treating me to some gorgeous new dies over the last couple of weeks and this stitched banner die set are one of my new ones. I’ve been wanting some new dies for a while and a banner especially, the bonus is that it is pierced too!
Thank you so much for taking the time to visit and comment. I really do appreciate it and I hope you get some time to do what you love to do soon ttfn Karen x

I love my one set of Altenew stamps and getting another is quite high up on the stamp wish list although I still want to try some more styles and look with this set too. That’s when I know that my stamp set was well bought as I haven’t run out of ideas for trying techniques and styles with it. I have quite a few of that style of stamps these days, thankfully, because although my style may have evolved a bit, or a lot lol, I still go back to certain stamps or stamp sets to play with them again and again. I have got to have a massive de-stash session in my craft room and I really need to give that a really clean too. I am a mucky crafter when playing with paint, whether that be acrylic paints, Brusho crystals, inks or a watercolour palette. My craft lamp can attest to that, poor thing has some splats and dribbles on it, so I would like to clean it and make it right as I feel guilty about it lol!

Another journal page ...

Hello my lovely friends and visitors, I hope your week is going well. For some reason I felt a strong need and compulsion to play in my MM Journal again with lovely rich red and pinks with splashes of white and green here and there before the month run out lol! Here is the end result …

An A5 page

Stamps & Stencils Challenge Texture, Crackle & Paint

I decided to do an experiment of free journaling, no plan up front, I wanted to be relaxed and see what would happen. Using pink and red together is a lot alien to me and out of my comfort zone. I applied a layer of gesso with my brayer and dried it with my heat tool. I’ve found that applying the gesso with a brayer gives me a light layer of gesso and that dries really quickly and doesn’t bubble multiple win wins!

I applied Maimeri texture gel through a Tando Creative stencil and I used my heat gun because I wanted lovely big bubbles. I applied a layer of Worn Lipstick Distress paint over the page sprayed and dried with my heat tool. I dabbed Fired Brick Distress paint on the edges, sprayed then dried. I attached the same stencil and applied fired brick Distress paint randomly on the RHS of the page, sprayed and dried. I then applied the stencil again and added Distress Rock Candy Crackle paint and left that to dry. I used some Leonie Pujol stamps and Memento IP to add detail to the LHS of the page. I had a piece of watercolour card left over from playing with the Simon Says Stamp stencil on watercolour paper so I tore the edges and attached it to the RHS using matt medium. I used the Simon Says Stamp stamp set on a die cut heart and attached it. It needed something more so I die cut a hummingbird and coloured with Pebeo Dyna iridescent paints.

I am not 100% happy with my journal page. The bonus is that I learnt several things: red and pink isn’t a combination I like; I should have used a larger heart instead of the hummingbird and for me less is more when I am journaling, lol! I allowed myself to journal and not think about it just to go with the flow and I think I will do that again but I’ll tweak this experiment and think a little about the theme and colours before I start and then walk away from it before I add any more so that the journal page is more coherent in the end. Thank you so much for taking the time to visit and comment. I really do appreciate it and I hope you get some time to do what you love to do soon ttfn Karen x

Have a Heart (photo heavy post) ...

Hello my lovely friends and visitors, I hope your week is going well. As I mentioned in a post about a month ago my intention for 2017 is to make more mixed media, practice my drawing and painting skills and not create so many card, lol, so far I have stuck to my pledge, I know it’s only the second month in but I didn’t even manage that last year, anyways here is a home décor project I have been working on …

I will try to remember to measure this!
I'm never sure what style to call this, but I think it's distressed?
This saying is true, I see beauty everywhere in the countryside and in nature

A final look at the first side

I want to enter this into the Indigo Blu Stamps Challenge Love is All You Need

And here is the B side ...

Lots of lovely texture and bold colours
Lots of yummy details and colour
A close up of the stencilling and where the texture paste failed
Butterflies, flowers and a perfect sentiment

A final look at the B side

I want to enter this side into the following challenges
And I want to enter the complete heart into these challenges
Allsorts Challenge #403 Anything Goes
A Vintage Journey Challenge Words That Are Special
Creative Artiste Challenge #23 Anything Mixed Media Goes
Frilly & Funkie Challenge Out of the Cold
Mixed Media World Challenge MMW#22 Mixed Media Anything Goes
Scrapy Land Challenge #60 Add Texture:
I used Crafters Companion & Spellbinder dies

I recently found a bag with, I think, three of these large chipboard hearts in it. I was somewhat surprised because I thought I had used them all up because I have owned these for a very, very long time! So what with Valentines and February being the month of love I thought I would start out altering one of them and see how it went and I had so much fun!!! I’ll try to keep my waffling about it as succinct as possible but I do want to document the steps I took so feel free to skip this. I’m still not yet confident about working straight onto chipboard, no idea why, but I’m not.

Side A:
I grabbed an A5 piece of Sheena card which had a thin layer of gesso on then my one and only Indigo Blu stencil and my only one set of Tim Holtz Distress Crayons. I repeat stencilled over the A5 card until it was covered. This is my first proper play with the Distress crayons and I have found that they blend beautifully over card that has a light layer of gesso on it.
I’ve not tried it direct to card or paper yet – that’s on the to do list. They are very rich and a little goes a long way, but there is a technique to applying them and I got softer blends and used less crayon on the B side. Much more play is required!
As I was still experimenting I sprayed the A5 panel with water to see what that would do and I loved the look. I heat set it.

Side B:
I had a rejected piece of Sheena stamping card that had already been coloured. I had added texture paste but not well so it sunk underneath the stencil. I decided to use that as most of that would be covered and what wasn’t covered would also give more texture to the heart. I attached my Stamplorations stencil and used the crayons to create a field of flowers, adding more colour as I worked up the heart. I also made sure the flowers had stems too.

Side A&B
I used an Indigo Blu stamp set for the sentiments and the butterflies for both sides. I stamped the Indigo Blu sentiment twice with Versafine black IP and then die cut two circles to add to my heart. I inked up the butterfly stamp with Spectrum Aqua pen and stamped them three times, I then lightly sprayed them with water to make them a little less harsh looking, hope that makes sense. I fussy cut them out and then added a layer or Rock Candy Distress crackle paint.

I wanted to use WOC flowers on both sides and I decided to change the colour of those (I purchase white or ivory and change them to suit my project). I decided at this point that I also wanted to have more hearts hanging off the large chipboard heart so I die cut four hearts. I coloured the hearts with my Spectrum Aqua pens and added a bit more depth to the edges with the crayons. I stamped the sentiment with black Versafine ink pad and die cut it then I did the same colouring technique as I had done on the hearts. I also die cut a butterfly with the last of my Sheena card snippets (they have their own snippets box lol!)

I played around with the layout and decorations and I actually ended up removing some of them before I glued it all together. The thing that was the most fiddly/painful was getting that ric rac ribbon to stay flat so I could add a hanger to the top and have the hearts hanging off too! I am, unusually, happy with the end result – hope you all like it too. Thank you so much for taking the time to visit and comment. I really do appreciate it and I hope you get some time to do what you love to do soon ttfn Karen x
