Field of flowers ...

Hello my lovely friends and visitors, I hope your week is going well. It was only as I started to write this post that I realised I've created another project with flowers on it, lol, I've tried not to create any more floral projects but I can't always help it, because I just let myself grab a stamp and go, anyways here is my card …

I also grabbed a snippet of watercolour paper to play with!
I used lots of die cuts but I tried to keep it reasonably post friendly
I am happy with how this one turned out, love my Aqua paint pens!
The final snippet of that ribbon and lots of other snippets were used too!

I'm still in the midst of my paper crafting re-organisation and I'm trying to de-clutter some of my previous crafty supplies at the same time too. I used to do glass painting, silk painting, knitting and sewing. I would love to get back into the sewing at some point but my fingers no longer like the knitting and glass painting. I'm also struggling with the silk painting because of using gutta so the supplies from that will probably have to be recycled too. I'm trying to sort through my stamps right now as I'm pretty sure there are going to be quite a few that I no longer use. The stamps on this card are NBUS stamps, hangs head in shame, nine years at least I've owned them and it's the first time I've used and created something with them. They're so pretty and lovely that they are not going anywhere. I inked them up with my Spectrum Aqua pens and created this beautiful scene, not much work was required on my part.

I am still surprised that I have stuck with paper crafting for so long, lol, but I am also happy about it too. When I look back at how I started and what was available back then I am both amazed and happy and I also feel blessed. It's much more expensive to start this hobby than it was and I'm lucky that when I started to do this my husband and family, over the years, have either clubbed together or purchased a tool or kit for birthday or Christmas. I freely admit I've been a stamp addict since the start and even though I'm trying to learn to draw, to paint and learn more mixed media techniques, I still regularly fall in love with and need stamps, especially, dare I say it, flower stamps lol, and I now have those moments with dies, masks and stencils too lol!!

Once again this week another quick post from me as I appear to be drowning a little in the stuff that I am trying to do and achieve. I'm hoping things will get back to normal after the end of May as my brother, Luke and Bethan are getting married then and I'm trying to get everything sorted, organised and ready to go well in advance. That is a skill that I do not possess, I do not do organised and I don't do organised and sorted either. It's a real struggle for me. After the wedding, celebrations and our mini break are over I hope to be able to get back to normal visiting. I'm also trying and hoping that the crafty mess will be sorted by then too. Sorry I'm not around and am being a bit cryptic but things will become a bit clearer in a few months time. Thank you so much for taking the time to visit and comment. I really do appreciate it and I hope you get some time to do what you love to do soon ttfn Karen x

For our home ...

Hello my lovely friends and visitors, I hope your weekend is going well. I’ve been practising using my Spectrum Aqua pens and this is the end result …

It measures roughly 22 cm x 26 cm

At least I didn't have to worry about the depth for a change lol!
All the details
There are pale areas on the flowers - from the Spectrum Sparkle pens
Lots of lovely texture from all the embellishments

I was especially inspired by the blue and the flowers
And I added a pop of yellow with the sun

I didn't start out with the idea of creating a canvas/hanging for our home, it just evolved, lol, and the mister has told me in no uncertain terms that this one is not going anywhere, he wants us to keep it and display it. I've trained my husband to critique my projects and it's taken me a couple of goes to get this right and it's had a few different looks until I felt I had nailed it and when he saw how I had changed it he loved it, as I said I have trained him well, lol! I knew the first two incarnations weren't quite right and that tends to be when I ask him for a second opinion. He can usually find the fault before I can which is good, he has learnt well lovelies!

I used Sheena's white stamping card which I coloured with AquaTints to create a sunset and landscape. Once that was finished I grabbed the silhouette flower stamps and inked them up with the Spectrum Aqua pens and created a garden of flowers. I put that to one side and that was then I decided to create a home decor project. I have sheets of chipboard so I cut one of those down and added two layers of acrylic paint to it. I decided that I didn't want to add texture paste anywhere on it as I wanted to use lots of flowers to decorate it. I attached a length of lace to the top and some ribbon so that we can hang it. Once that was dry I grabbed my box of flowers and started to embellish. Simples lol!

I am very glad that I took the time to reinforce the way that I use the Spectrum Aqua pens to stamp beautifully coloured flowers and I am also very glad that I got to use some of my hoard of flowers too, lol! I hope you like it as much as we do. Thank you so much for taking the time to visit and comment. I really do appreciate it and I hope you get some time to do what you love to do soon ttfn Karen x

A piece for my craft room ...

Hello my lovely friends and visitors, I hope your week is going well. I had to get my Altenew Stamps out to play with so that I could enter the Altenew Challenge as well as some other challenges and here is what I managed to create with acrylics, embossing powders, snippets and watercolours …

It's about 22 cm tall and 17 cm wide

I had quite a few large snippets of Kraft card left over from Bethan and Luke's wedding invitations and I decided to use them to create a piece that I could see in my craft room. My hubby isn't keen on Kraft so I wanted to create something just for me to remind me of my beautiful stamps and tools. I die cut two borders from the first two Kraft snippets and then adhered one to the other. I left them to dry then I trimmed a piece of A4 Kraft card in half and attached the die cut border between them, basically I created a Kraft sandwich lol!

I grabbed another snippet (Sheena's white stamping card) and I stamped and embossed (white EP) the flowers randomly across the card. I then used Spectrum Noir AquaTints to colour the background and I put it to one side to dry completely before I started to colour the flowers. I have, in the past I've coloured the flowers straight away. But I am a bit heavy handed when watercolouring so I left the background to dry overnight because I didn't want any water or paint to colour the flowers green. The next day I coloured the flowers and put the piece of card aside to dry.

The background ended up being much brighter than expected so I decided to add a layer of vellum/parchment paper to diffuse the background and the bonus was that I could stamp and emboss several words that appeal to me. The parchment also toned down the green and as I don't currently own any Altenew sentiment stamps I used one of my Simon Says Stamp sets to stamp 'Amazing, Crazy, Fabulous, Happy' words with Versamark and a second embossing powder colour, Verdigris, the words are there to remind me:

Amazing: life live it and enjoy it
Crazy: in love with my husband and art
Fabulous: I have a small yet fabulous family
Happy: these are all the things that make me Happy, lol!

Yes I'm a nutty fruitcake at times too.

I stamped and heat embossed multiple flower images onto really small snippets of Sheena's stamping card with a third embossing powder and I coloured them with my Spectrum Aqua and Spectrum Noir Sparkle pens. Once dry I fussy cut my snippet flowers out and started to play around with the layout and added embellishments, whether they are my own or ones that I have die cut. I didn't manage to photograph any of the shimmer and shine from them. Thank you so much for taking the time to visit and comment. I really do appreciate it and I hope you get some time to do what you love to do soon ttfn Karen x

May Mixed Media Tag #2 ...

Hello my lovely friends and visitors, I hope your week is going well. I'm trying to get my May mixed media projects completed, photographed and posts typed before we go to visit my brother and attend his wedding at the end of this month, lol. I won't be able to do anything after, not because of booze, cheeky! My back pain will go through the roof because of the car trip there and back plus the actual event so I know I'll be laid up for at least two weeks, maybe more. It's going to be painful and rough but we wouldn't miss it for the world and I'm very proud of the man, father and husband to be he is and he will become.

Back to my crafting now, lol. I had four alcohol ink colours on my desk from last months techniques with alcohol inks (AIs) and as they were sitting right in front of me I thought it would be rude not to play with them. Luckily I also have had one of my chubby tags cut out and I had applied a layer of gesso to so I wanted to create another tag and here it is …

A second chubby mixed media tag!
Some lovely depth and texture
All the yummy details
I love how the alcohol inks have pooled around the embossing paste

A bolt of butterfly sunshine & snippets were die cut to embellish

Anything Goes

I used my template to cut a tag and applied a layer of gesso. This was the first time I had used the embossing pastes to create a scene rather than just as an embellishing agent and I made a couple of errors, of course, so I learnt a couple of things about how to do this the next time. Below is how I did it this time, in the hope that it reminds me not to do this next time lol!

I wanted to create a landscape with a light blue sky and a green meadow of wild flowers. I attached the stencil and applied the embossing pastes in two batches. I used the Dreamweaver matt black to add two black flowers, removed the stencil and cleaned it and I left that to dry for three hours before re-attaching the stencil and applying the white pearl paste. I decided to leave it to dry overnight before the next step, I wasn't sure how the wet embossing paste would react to the AIs so better safe than sorry.

I used a blue AI to colour the sky by dripping the AI onto the tag and applying AI blending solution and by tipping the tag I created a lovely pale blue sky. I popped it aside for a while before doing the same with a green AI however I became aware that I was creating dark green AI puddles at the bottom of the tag because the embossing paste was working like a liner and trapped the colour. I deliberately didn't use an ink blending tool because I didn't want the flowers to be blue. As I said before I made a couple of errors but we live and learn lol!

The colour did get onto the white pearl embossing paste flowers and stems but the stems weren't an issue, lol, and I thought I might be able to fix the colour of the flowers with the AI blending solution and an ear bud (a Q tip for my US readers). I dipped the ear bud into the AI solution and removed the blue from the flowers. The white pearl flowers were a little stained so I used pink and yellow AI to colour them and that created pretty little peach flowers.

Of course I needed to stamp and embellish so I used one of my wooden/chipboard embellishments which I coloured with Distress paint and heat set to bubble a little. I stamped the beautiful butterflies using Distress IP onto white snippets and fussy cut them. I had some flower and branch die cuts left over from a previous die cutting spree so I decided to use them to embellish the tag further. As per usual I had to play around a little with the placement and I think I got it right in the end because I'm actually happy with the end result this time.

This was the first time I used AIs to draw a landscape like I would usually draw with a pencil or watercolour pencil. It won't be the last time, lol, I am very happy with the end result and I will be experimenting more with alcohol inks, hopefully, a little experiment each month would work wonderfully and shrink my pile of AIs too! Thank you so much for taking the time to visit and comment. I really do appreciate it and I hope you get some time to do what you love to do soon ttfn Karen x
